On Friday, 26 June, Sasol and partners delivered a rehabilitated 35 km stretch of National Road Number 1 (EN1), linking Pambara, in the Vilanculos district, and Mangungumete, in the Inhassoro district. The works were financed by Sasol and its partners, namely Companhia Moçambicana de Hidrocarbonetos S.A (CMH) and International Finance Corporation (IFC).
It is the road that is used as the main North-South land gateway in the country and widely used by local communities to transport people and goods to and from the rest of the country.
For a significantly long period of time, the circulation of vehicles on this section of the EN1 Road was an enormous challenge for users, including Sasol, due to the marked state of degradation in which it found itself.
It was in view of this degrading situation that Sasol, within the scope of its corporate social responsibility, signed an agreement with the National Road Agency (ANE) and with its partners – CMH and IFC – financed the rehabilitation of this EN1 Road, with a total cost of six million US$ dollars.
The EN1 road delivery ceremony was led by the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine, in the presence of representatives of the local government, the National Road Agency (ANE) and the community.
Speaking to those present, João Machatine expressed his satisfaction with the support provided by Sasol and partners. “This intervention was made at an opportune time and in the place where the degradation was actually quite accentuated, so we want to greet all the stakeholders who were involved in this undertaking and take this opportunity to recognize Sasol’s gesture”, said João Machatine.
Afonso Sitoe, a resident of Maimelane, district of Inhassoro, an area crossed by the road now rehabilitated who supports his wife and children with revenue from this route as a transporter, said he was satisfied with the rehabilitation. “Before, transit was very difficult due to potholes and our cars always had breakdowns. But, from now on, thanks to Sasol’s support in the rehabilitation of the road, we will be more comfortable to do business and carry on with our life”, said Afonso Sitoe.
Afonso’s opinion is shared by the other members of the communities who live along the road, as witnessed by Jaime Ngolove, community leader in Maimelane. “I thank the Government and Sasol because together they realized that there was a need to rehabilitate the road and we are already seeing the benefits of this”.
The rehabilitation of this section represents a relief not only for the local communities, but also for the long-haul transporters who now have better conditions of transit.
“We financed this project because safety is an integral part of our values and the way we do business and because we believe that investing in a road like this is a significant contribution to the country’s economy,” said Ovídio Rodolfo, General Manager of Sasol in Mozambique.
The rehabilitation work was coordinated by ANE, guaranteeing the efficiency and the highest specifications of the works, for the benefit of all road users. According to the technical team, a new technology called “Cape Seal” was applied in this rehabilitation, for the first time in EN1, which consists of a single sealing with the application of a layer of 80/100 bitumen in 14 mm stone, which guarantees a smoother and more durable surface.
Sasol entrega 35 km da EN1 totalmente reabilitados
A Sasol e parceiros entregaram, na Sexta-feira, dia 26 de Junho de 2020, uma extensão reabilitada de 35 km da Estrada Nacional número 1 (EN1), ligando Pambara, no distrito de Vilanculos, e Mangungumete, no distrito de Inhassoro. As obras foram financiadas pela Sasol e seus parceiros, nomeadamente, Companhia Moçambicana de Hidrocarbonetos S.A (CMH) e International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Trata-se de uma estrada que é usada como a principal porta de entrada terrestre Norte-Sul no país e bastante utilizada pelas comunidades locais para transportar pessoas e bens de e para o resto do país.
Durante um período significativamente longo, a circulação de veículos neste troço da EN1 constituía um enorme desafio para os utentes, incluindo a Sasol, devido ao acentuado estado de degradação em que se encontrava.
Foi perante esta situação de degradação que a Sasol, no âmbito da sua responsabilidade social corporativa, assinou um acordo com a Administração Nacional de Estradas (ANE) e com os seus parceiros – CMH e IFC – financiou a reabilitação deste troço, com um custo total de seis milhões de dólares americanos.
A cerimónia de entrega da estrada foi dirigida pelo Ministro das Obras Públicas, Habitação e Recursos Hídricos, João Machatine, na presença de representantes do governo local, da Administração Nacional de Estradas (ANE) e da comunidade.
Falando aos presentes, João Machatine manifestou a sua satisfação com o apoio prestado pela Sasol e parceiros. “Esta intervenção foi feita em momento oportuno e no local em que efectivamente a degradação era bastante acentuada, por isso, queremos saudar todos os intervenientes que estiveram envolvidos nesta empreitada e aproveitar esta oportunidade para reconhecermos o gesto da Sasol”, afirmou João Machatine.
Afonso Sitoe, residente na localidade de Maimelane, distrito de Inhassoro, zona atravessada pelo traçado da estrada ora reabilitada e que sustenta os seus dois filhos e esposa com receitas vinda desta via enquanto transportador, disse estar satisfeito com a reabilitação. “Antes, era muito difícil a transitabilidade devido aos buracos e os nossos carros sempre registavam avarias. Mas, de agora em diante, graças ao apoio da Sasol na reabilitação da via, estaremos mais cómodos para fazer negócios e levar a vida à frente”, desabafou Afonso Sitoe.
A opinião de Afonso é partilhada pelos demais membros das comunidades que vivem ao longo da estrada, e não só, conforme testemunhou Jaime Ngolove, líder comunitário em Maimelane. “Agradeço o Governo e a Sasol porque juntos perceberam que havia necessidade de criar condições para que a estrada voltasse a ser transitável e já estamos a notar os beneficios disto”.
A reabilitação deste troço representa um alívio não só para as comunidades locais, mas também para os transportadores de longo curso que passam a ter melhores condições de transitabilidade.
“Financiámos esta obra porque a segurança é parte integrante dos nossos valores e da forma como fazemos negócios e porque acreditamos que investir numa estrada como esta constitui um contributo significativo para a economia do país”, afirmou Ovídio Rodolfo, Director Geral da Sasol em Moçambique. O trabalho de reabilitação foi coordenado pela ANE, garantindo a eficácia e as mais elevadas especificações das obras, em benefício de todos os utentes da estrada. De acordo com a equipa técnica, foi aplicado nesta reabilitação, pela primeira vez na EN1, uma nova tecnologia denominada “Cape Seal” que consiste numa selagem simples com aplicação de uma camada de 80/100 de Betume em pedra de 14 mm, o que garante uma superfície mais lisa e com maior durabilidade.
