Sasol advances community safety awareness in Mpumalanga

Sasol, in collaboration with key municipal stakeholders, recently hosted a gas pipeline community safety awareness session at the Uitkyk community grounds in Mpumalanga. The initiative forms part of Sasol’s ongoing commitment to promoting the safety and well-being of communities located near critical energy infrastructure.

The session brought together community members, local leadership and emergency services to engage on the safe operation of gas pipelines and the shared responsibility required to safeguard both people and infrastructure.

The initiative was underpinned by strong collaboration between Sasol and local government structures, including the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Nkangala District Disaster Management, municipal fire and emergency services, environmental services teams, and Uitkyk community leadership. A joint planning committee was established in advance to support a coordinated approach and ensure meaningful community engagement.

The involvement of municipal leadership, including the Office of the Executive Mayor, reinforced the importance of the initiative and strengthened the impact of the safety awareness message.
Importantly, the session extended beyond pipeline safety. By incorporating perspectives from disaster management, fire and rescue services, and environmental teams, the programme delivered a more integrated approach to community safety and preparedness.

Community awareness initiatives of this nature play a critical role in preventing incidents before they occur. By equipping residents with relevant knowledge and encouraging responsible behaviour, they contribute to a shared understanding of risk and collective accountability.

The success of the session highlights the value of proactive engagement and partnership. Sasol will continue to roll out similar initiatives across its operational footprint to ensure that communities remain informed, prepared and supported.
