The first years of a child’s life play a critical role in shaping their future. When Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners have the right skills, knowledge and support, children are better prepared to learn, grow and thrive. This is why the Sasol Foundation continues to invest in strengthening ECD centres and practitioner development through its long-standing partnership with The Unlimited Child.
In October, 38 ECD practitioners and centre managers from the King Cetshwayo District graduated with nationally recognised qualifications, marking an important milestone in their professional development.
Among the graduates, 23 obtained a Further Education and Training Certificate in Early Childhood Development at NQF Level 4, while 15 achieved an NQF Level 5 qualification. Since beginning their studies in 2024, they have balanced their coursework with the daily demands of running centres, teaching young children and supporting their communities.
The graduates are part of a broader programme that was expanded into the King Cetshwayo District in 2024. The initiative supports 50 ECD centres and benefits more than 2 000 children while strengthening the capabilities of practitioners and centre managers across the district.

The programme goes beyond formal qualifications. Practitioners receive training, coaching and mentoring, while centre managers are supported through leadership and management development. ECD centres also benefit from learning resources, nutrition support, parent engagement programmes and assistance with registration and compliance requirements.
These interventions help create stronger learning environments while building a more capable and sustainable ECD sector.
The greatest impact is seen in the children. Skilled practitioners are better equipped to support literacy, numeracy, language development and social and cognitive growth during the years that matter most.
The Sasol Foundation’s partnership with The Unlimited Child began in 2017 and has evolved from supporting a small group of home-based ECD centres into a comprehensive programme that strengthens practitioner capabilities, learning environments and centre sustainability across communities in KwaZulu-Natal.
By investing in the people who nurture and educate young children every day, the Sasol Foundation is helping to build stronger foundations for learning, development and future opportunity.
