Over the past decade, the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) has faced significant challenges due to a lack of service delivery and maintenance. These issues, coupled with Sasol’s own cost containment and reduction initiatives in recent years, have had a direct impact on the company’s long-standing vision to help make GMM a safe, vibrant, and thriving community for residents and the broader Sasol family.
As a result of deteriorating infrastructure, public recreation facilities such as the eMbalenhle Stadium and several local parks have fallen into disrepair, leaving few usable spaces for community gatherings and sporting events. Today, the Secunda Stadium stands as one of the few remaining venues capable of hosting schools and community sports activities in eMbalenhle, Secunda, and surrounding areas.
Recognising the importance of such spaces, Sasol has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalising community infrastructure through continued investment in sports and recreation facilities. This initiative forms a vital part of Sasol’s broader Corporate Social Investment (CSI) strategy one that underscores the company’s dedication to social responsibility, community empowerment, and sustainable development.
Investing in People Through Infrastructure
Sasol’s involvement in community sports and recreation extends beyond facility upgrades it is about nurturing values such as teamwork, perseverance, and achievement. By supporting the communities in which it operates, Sasol strengthens relationships with stakeholders, enhances its corporate reputation, and reinforces its image as a company deeply invested in social progress.
The Secunda Stadium Upgrade Project

In line with its Theory of Change framework, Sasol launched a multi-year initiative to upgrade the Secunda Stadium, a cornerstone project that reflects the company’s commitment to creating safer, more inclusive, and enjoyable community spaces.
Progress to date includes:
2023: Replacement of 250 stadium chairs, including the installation of additional structural steel for enhanced stability.
2024: Replacement of another 300 chairs, maintaining the focus on comfort and safety.
2025: Replacement of 865 chairs, bringing the total to 1415 upgraded seats to date.
With 1011 chairs still to be replaced, Sasol remains steadfast in its commitment to complete the project, ensuring that spectators can enjoy a safe, comfortable, and modern environment.
Building a Legacy of Community Pride
Beyond improving physical infrastructure, the Secunda Stadium upgrade is about creating opportunities for connection and pride. It strengthens the local sporting culture, encourages youth participation, and provides a welcoming space where families and residents can come together for memorable experiences.
At Sasol, we believe that investing in community infrastructure is investing in the future. Through projects like the Secunda Stadium upgrade, we continue to build stronger communities, foster local pride, and make a lasting, positive difference in the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
