Desde Julho de 2020, a Sasol em Moçambique tem vindo a reforçar o seu compromisso com o desenvolvimento sustentável das comunidades de Inhassoro e Govuro, através de um investimento robusto de 20 milhões de dólares norte-americanos no âmbito dos Acordos de Desenvolvimento Local (ADL). Este investimento estratégico visa responder às prioridades identificadas pelas próprias comunidades circunvizinhas, promovendo melhorias reais e duradouras na qualidade de vida da população.
As acções da Sasol centram-se em áreas-chave como o desenvolvimento económico local, água e saneamento, infra-estruturas sociais e acesso à energia. Mais de 500 pessoas já foram capacitadas em iniciativas que promovem o empreendedorismo, a produção agrícola e o fortalecimento das cadeias de valor locais. Projectos como a produção de castanha de caju, hortícolas, ovos e artesanato, bem como a instalação de sistemas de irrigação, têm contribuído para aumentar a renda familiar e estimular uma economia comunitária mais resiliente.
Paralelamente, a Sasol tem investido fortemente em infra-estruturas essenciais. A construção de blocos sanitários, a reabilitação de furos e a instalação de sistemas de abastecimento de água já beneficiaram directamente mais de 30 mil pessoas. A melhoria das condições de vida é também visível nos espaços públicos, com a renovação de escolas, centros comunitários, mercados locais e a requalificação de unidades de saúde, como o Hospital Distrital de Mangungumete.
Outro pilar deste investimento é a expansão do acesso à electricidade através de soluções off-grid, especialmente em zonas onde a rede nacional da EDM não chega. Esta abordagem tem garantido maior autonomia energética, permitindo às comunidades locais aceder a novas oportunidades económicas e sociais com maior sustentabilidade.

Local Development Agreements: Sasol in Mozambique Invests in the Priorities of Fence Line Communities
Since July 2020, Sasol in Mozambique has been steadily reinforcing its commitment to the sustainable development of local communities through a substantial investment of USD 20 million under the framework of Local Development Agreements (LDAs). This long-term funding initiative is aimed squarely at addressing the priorities identified by communities in Inhassoro and Govuro, two rural districts in the Inhambane Province, where the needs are urgent and the potential for impact is considerable.
The investment strategy is focused on key pillars: local economic development, access to water and sanitation, critical infrastructure, and energy provision. More than 500 individuals have already received training through programmes that promote entrepreneurship and strengthen local value chains. Small-scale projects—ranging from cashew nut cultivation and vegetable production to egg farming, irrigation systems and handicrafts—are beginning to generate income and create a more self-reliant, locally driven economy.
But it is not just about livelihoods. Sasol’s efforts extend to essential infrastructure that underpins public health and community well-being. Clean water supply systems, rehabilitated boreholes, and new sanitation blocks have improved living conditions for over 30 000 people. Public facilities—schools, community centres, local markets—are being upgraded. At the heart of this push is the refurbishment of key health services, most notably the Mangungumete District Hospital, which now serves as a critical lifeline for the surrounding population.
One of the most transformative aspects of the initiative is the expansion of energy access through off-grid solutions—particularly significant in areas beyond the reach of the national electricity grid. These decentralised systems are providing not only light and power, but a renewed sense of opportunity and autonomy for remote communities.
By putting the priorities of host communities at the centre of its operations, Sasol is reshaping its presence in Mozambique—not merely as an energy producer, but as a development partner committed to inclusive and lasting impact.
