Sasol Breaks Ground on New Water Supply System in Govuro

Sasol has yesterday, 24 April, officially launched the construction of another water supply system — this time in Maluvane, Govuro district, Inhambane province. The infrastructure, financed by the company under the framework of the Local Development Agreements (LDAs), will serve three neighbourhoods in the locality and will include around 500 household connections and 10 public standpipes, reinforcing Sasol’s ongoing commitment to sustainable community development.

The ground-breaking ceremony, symbolically launching the project, was presided over by the District Administrator of Govuro, Fernando Doda Muzobingua. The project responds to a primary need of the Maluvane community and aims to improve access to clean and safe drinking water in a secure and efficient manner.

In the first phase, a support tower with elevated water tanks will be built and connected to the distribution network. The second phase will include the construction of a 20-kilometre-long main pipeline, connecting boreholes to the central network, ensuring consistent delivery of the essential resource.

For Fernando Doda Muzobingua, the project marks an important step in improving quality of life in the district. “Without water, there is no health, no development. This project represents a decisive step for the wellbeing of our population,” he declared.

Ovídio Rodolfo, Sasol’s General Manager in Mozambique, stated that the initiative reflects the company’s deep commitment to community welfare. “This project is a reflection of our commitment to sustainable solutions that have a real impact on people’s lives,” he said.

A local resident of Maluvane expressed the community’s excitement at the beginning of the construction works. “We walk long distances for good water, and even then, it’s not always clean. Now we see a better future on the horizon, once the infrastructure is delivered,” said Elisa Massingue. “There was a time we thought Sasol had forgotten the commitment made in 2019 — which was renewed in 2022 with the opening of two boreholes. Today, seeing this project move forward, we feel a deep satisfaction and a hope that, this time, tomorrow will be different,” she added.

This system joins other similar interventions financed by Sasol in the districts of Govuro and Inhassoro, including the systems of Chimedje, Pande Sede, Colonga, and Chipongo. Under the Water and Sanitation pillar of the LDAs, Sasol is investing approximately five million US dollars to improve water coverage and ensure that communities have access to a safe water source within a 30-minute walking distance.

As a proud sponsor of Banyana Banyana, we unveiled a campaign for the team’s world cup campaign that took place in Australia and New Zealand from 20 July – 20 August 2023. This campaign, encapsulated in the bold statement “South Africa, your support is our energy”, as a call for all South Africans to stand fully behind the team as they will be undertaking this mammoth task of representing the country on this global stage.

Speaking at the launch event, Charlotte Mokoena – Sasol’s Executive Vice President for Human Resources and Stakeholder Relations, said Sasol is reaffirming its commitment to the national team through this campaign, having been a part of the squad for 15 years.

“Nelson Mandela once said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people”. Now we are headed to the biggest stage in women’s football, where the challenge is bigger, the opponents are harder, and every game is difficult. However, I can attest that these ladies are fearless and will represent South Africa to the best of their ability, BUT they need us, South Africa. This is our chance to show the world what our athletes are capable of, but more importantly, what they can do with the support of a nation”.

Mokoena explained that as humans, we all need the energy to perform our daily duties – in our different vocations, for learners and students to study – we cannot do anything without energy. This campaign is a call to all 60 million South Africans to show their support and rally behind the team. She implores people to send messages of support that will give the team energy to perform optimally throughout the tournament period. “This energy will enable the team to train harder, have more power on the field, and take on their opponents head-on! – knowing that South Africa is behind them all the way!”

Sasol’s sponsorship journey with Banyana Banyana

Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana are South Africa’s senior national women’s football team and the country’s most successful national football team of recent times. Following South Africa’s readmission to international football in 1992, the woman’s football team was first assembled in 1993 with a match against Swaziland.

In 2009, Sasol went into partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA), officially launching its sponsorship of the national team and breaking the mould as one of few companies that have energised the women’s game in the country.

The aim of the partnership is to develop and support women’s football by creating opportunities for the team to participate in international tournaments around the globe.

Through Sasol’s backing for Banyana Banyana, the team has shown massive growth and achievements each year. These include the team’s qualification for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, participation in the Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament in London 2012 and Rio 2016.

The team claimed the COSAFA Championship four years running in 2017 and 2020. In addition, Banyana Banyana were also crowned the 2022 CAF African Women’s Champions, with striker Thembi Kgatlana winning the CAF Women’s Footballer and Goal of the Year accolades in 2018 and coach Desiree Ellis being named as a 3x CAF Women’s Coach of the Year.

Over the years, Sasol’s impact on the women’s game has resulted in more and more players being recognised through college scholarships and signed by clubs internationally.

With most of the Banyana Banyana players coming from the Sasol League, the partnership between Sasol and SAFA has made a real difference in the development of women’s football. Graduates that have gone on to spread their wings at bigger clubs and leagues have illuminated the path so that young girls can believe that their dreams can also come true.

At the handover, the school community thanked Sasol for its support, with special mention of Priscillah Mabelane, Executive Vice President as well as the Energy Business Exco, who spearheaded the initiative to collect employee donations.

Director of Temane Primary School Agostinho Mulima praised Sasol’s fulfilment of its promise to the school and urged the students to prioritize their studies, as they will pave the way to success.

Sasol Hands Over Vocational Training Facilities to Estrela do Mar School

On 24 November 2022, Sasol handed over vocational training facilities to Escola Industrial e Comercial Estrela do Mar in Inhassoro. These are the temporary facilities where, since 2015, the Inhassoro Vocational Training Centre (CFPI) operated, which, from 22 November, began operating in its new facilities funded by Sasol.

At a cost of around US$483,000, the facilities delivered were funded by Sasol on land temporarily ceded by the beneficiary school, and contain 3 container-type classrooms, support service facilities and a multifunctional workshop with training equipment in electricity, mechanics, and welding.

Over the last 7 years, the CFPI has operated in these provisional facilities, while its definitive facilities were under construction, and it was here that 483 youths from the Govuro, Inhassoro, Vilankulo, Mabote and Massinga districts were trained, with total Sasol funding.

Inauguration of the Inhassoro Training Centre

In November 2022, the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, inaugurated the Vocational Training Centre in the Inhassoro District, Inhambane Province. The centre is comprised of 5 classrooms with capacity for 20 students each, 3 workshops for practical lessons, 1 for mechanics, 1 for electricity and another for industrial welding and a residential block made up of 6 houses for the Centre’s staff.

The centre is fully furnished and equipped with state-of-the-art technology and includes an administration block, a playing field, water supply systems, a warehouse and other support infrastructures.

The construction of this centre was financed by Sasol, through a partnership with the Alberto Cassimo Institute for Training and Labour Studies (IFPELAC).

It should be noted that this funding, is part of a partnership with IFPELAC started in 2015, where Sasol funded the training of over 460 young people from the Districts of Govuro, Inhassoro, Vilankulo, Mabote and Massinga in Inhambane Province.

The construction began in 2019 and is part of Sasol’s commitment to the economic and social development of the country, by increasing the technical capacity of local youths, to enhance their employability.

In his speech, the President of the Republic, stressed that Sasol’s Social Responsibility project reflects a modern business philosophy, based on good coexistence with the surrounding communities.

For the President and CEO of Sasol, Fleetwood Grobler, ‘this initiative is a simple contribution to the efforts of the Government of Mozambique in reducing youth unemployment and to meet the needs of structural change in the labour market’.

To guarantee the sustainability of this training centre, Sasol and IFPELAC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), to establish a functional model for the first years of its operation. The agreement was signed by the respective Managing Directors, namely Leo Jamal and Ovidio Rodolfo.

After extensive negotiations, Sasol has concluded 2 Local Development Agreements (LDAs) with the communities of Inhassoro and Govuro districts in Inhambane Province, where the Pande/Temane gas fields and Central Processing Facility (CPF) are located.

The LDAs represent a tripartite agreement between Sasol, local communities and district governments and are aimed at aligning the priorities of all three parties.

From Sasol’s perspective, the LDAs are an opportunity to build on and leverage the Social Investment platform – totalling approximately US$40 million between 2004 and 2018 – already established by Sasol and its partners. LDAs also facilitate the implementation of Sasol’s ‘Shared Value’ strategy in a structured manner that aligns with community and local government expectations, as well as with the Government of Mozambique’s Corporate Social Responsibility Policy for the Extractive Sector.

Consultation with the covered communities and district governments indicated that the number one priority was water and sanitation, followed by access to electricity and economic development. Activities aimed at stimulating and enhancing the local economy, with the overall aim of increasing household incomes, were also identified as a priority.

The identified priority projects will be implemented with the help of partners such as the German development agency, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) andSNV Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) which have specialist expertise in agriculture, energy and water, as well as sanitation and hygiene.

The priority projects are essentially large multi-year high impact programmes, with the potential to extend coverage beyond primary to secondary beneficiaries.

Under the LDAs, there are two further categories of investment: stand-alone social investment projects and small-scale social investments. Stand-alone projects are one-off infrastructure projects identified through the community prioritization process. Examples include health centres and schools. The small-scale social investment fund will respond to community requests for small-scale contributions to community development like shelters for meetings and football grounds.

Ovidio Rodolfo, Sasol Country Manager commented, “We are proud to be the first company in Mozambique to implement LDAs which are aligned with CSR Policy and Implementation Guidelines approved by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in January 2017.

“We believe the LDAs will establish the foundation Sasol to build strong relations with stakeholders by working together under the principles of shared ownership, mutual responsibility and long-term commitment. They will also help to drive socio-economic development in the targeted geographies which in term will promote greater Shared Value in line with our Mozambican strategy.”
