Our Sasol Italy team and Sonatrach Raffineria Italiana signed a partnership with the Department of Applied Science and Technology of the Polytechnic University of Turin on 1 February 2021. The partnership will be focused on a feasibility study on the use of the “Carbon Capture, Storage and Use” (CCSU) technology in industrial processes of the two production sites in Augusta (Sicily).

The study will verify the possibility of sizing a plant for the capture and use of CO2 to produce synthesis gas (syngas) and liquid fuels, defining the most appropriate technical solutions and estimate the relative investment costs required. “The CCSU is an interesting prospect”, commented the CEO of Sonatrach Raffineria Italiana, Rosario Pistorio. “It would make it possible to produce fuel with very low CO2 emissions, with a significant result in terms of product sustainability and environmental impact. This innovative technology requires further research and feasibility analysis, before proceeding with the detailed analysis of the potential investment.

The partnership signed with Sasol and the Polytechnic University of Turin confirms the will to strengthen our investments in sustainability and lead the energy transition by researching and testing innovative solutions”. Sergio Corso, Vice President Operations of Sasol Italy, added: “The partnership with the Polytechnic University of Turin represents the first step to study innovative technologies for the production of synthetic gas and to start, in our territory, a virtuous circle based on the principles of circular economy.

A concrete action, that testifies the will and commitment of our companies to achieve new and challenging goals for the protection of the environment and an increasingly sustainable future for our plants”.
