We are grateful to Sasol for walking with us towards a brighter future, where young people engage in healthy activities like basketball.”

Alfredo Lopes, President of the Provincial Basketball Association, also praised Sasol’s commitment, noting that a portion of the support given to the LMB is specifically channelled to Inhambane.

For the young athletes, the tournament was both inspiring and formative. Shaquira Nagy, a female participant, said: “This 3×3 tournament has given us an incredible opportunity to showcase our talent, gain experience and believe that we can go further in basketball. Initiatives like this motivate us to keep training and to dream big.”

Sérgio Jossias, a male competitor, added: “The tournament brought a new energy to basketball in our community. It gives us a chance to compete in a structured and fair environment, learn from one another, grow as athletes and strengthen teamwork and unity among young people.”

Sparks of hope and possibility lit up Newton Pre-Vocational Technical School on Friday, 6 March 2026, as Sasol Energy’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) team joined learners for a memorable Back to School handover. With new shoes laced and school bags slung over shoulders, the day marked more than just the start of a school year, it was a celebration of dignity, opportunity, and the power of education to transform lives.

As part of the Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) Ministerial Back to School Campaign, Sasol donated 400 pairs of school shoes and 400 school bags to learners, easing the financial burden on families and ensuring that every child can step into the classroom with confidence.

The event was filled with excitement and gratitude, as learners experienced firsthand the impact of community support. For many, the donation will make a meaningful difference in their daily routines, reinforcing the message that their education matters.

On Tuesday, 13 January 2026, Sasol awarded cash incentives totalling R 200 000 to top-performing matriculants from Mpumalanga schools. The awards were extended during the announcement of Grade 12 provincial results at a ceremony held in Secunda. The 20 beneficiaries of the awards were five top performing learners in Mathematics, Physical Science, Technical Mathematics and Technical Science, who each received a sum R10 000. The funds will go towards the learners’ registration fees at any recognised South African institution of higher education.

Awarding top-achievers is in line with Sasol’s strategic objective of supporting the teaching of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in schools. This act also aims to encourage more learners to study these subjects.

Over the years, Sasol has made considerable investments in education through various initiatives such as merit bursaries, sponsorship of mobile science labs to under resourced schools, Sasol Energy Innovation Challenge, the National Skills Competition. These initiatives play a vital role in enabling excellence in science education.

The sponsorship of the provincial Grade 12 Awards is part of a long-standing partnership with the National Department of Education. In Mpumalanga, Sasol has been hosting Grade 12 Merit Awards in Secunda for the past 30 years, where learners from various districts are recognised and awarded for their outstanding performance. This year, Sasol will continue to recognise top achievers at district level across the province.

Sasolburg – Sasol continues to prioritise the wellbeing of communities in the Free State and beyond through its Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Response Plan. The launch of the Psychosocial Support Programme marks a key milestone in strengthening prevention, early intervention, and psychosocial support services, improving emotional wellbeing, trauma recovery, and mental health resilience across its fenceline communities.

In alignment with South Africa’s international 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, Sasol introduced its Psychosocial Support Programme in the Sasolburg region on 3 December 2025. “We acknowledge that GBVF is a major challenge in the Free State. The Sasol Psychosocial Support Programme provides enhanced psychosocial support throughout affected communities,” said Gao Mothoagae, Sasol’s Vice President: CSI and Sasol Foundation

As part of the programme’s launch, Sasol is activating the “Sasol For Good GBVF Awareness Campaign” – an employee-driven volunteer initiative focused on increasing awareness of psychosocial support services available to community members. Volunteers will distribute informational leaflets designed to educate, empower, and reinforce prevention messaging, mobilising community understanding of available support pathways and encouraging early access to psychosocial assistance.

The Programme

The Psychosocial Support Programme was informed by a comprehensive baseline study, which included consultations with community members, non-profit organisations (NPOs), social workers, Thuthuzela Care Centres, SAPS Victim-Friendly Units, and other key service providers.

The study identified several critical challenges:

Limited access to trauma counselling and psychological support, particularly for GBVF survivors, children, and vulnerable families;

Insufficient and inconsistent referral pathways among local NGOs, government departments, and service agencies;

High levels of emotional distress, anxiety, grief, behavioural challenges, and unresolved trauma;

Significant need for community-level early intervention and prevention-focused psychosocial services.

In response, Sasol has developed and invested in a flagship Psychosocial Support Programme, now rolled out in Sasolburg and Secunda. Graduate social workers have been appointed to strengthen service delivery and provide direct, community-based support.

In the Sasolburg region, five social workers will deliver trauma counselling and render emotional support, crisis intervention, individual and family support sessions, mental wellness and psycho-education workshops, and referral services in close collaboration with government departments (DoH, DSD, NPA, DoJ, SAPS), local NPOs, and community structures. Dedicated community access points will be established in Sasolburg and Secunda, ensuring that beneficiaries receive support close to home in safe, accessible environments.

“The launch of the Psychosocial Support Programme reinforces Sasol’s commitment to improving emotional wellbeing, trauma recovery, and mental health resilience in Sasolburg and our surrounding communities. It strengthens local support systems and improves stakeholders’ capacity to respond to psychosocial challenges faced by GBVF survivors, children, and families,” said Mothoagae.

By encouraging collaboration among government departments, NPO partners, and service providers, Sasol aims to ensure the sustainable, effective implementation of psychosocial support interventions.

Aligned with the national 365 Days GBVF Response Framework, Sasol’s initiative promotes early intervention, mental wellness, trauma recovery, and long-term community resilience -demonstrating ongoing support for vulnerable individuals and a strengthened community-based response to GBVF.

Initiative to Support Gender-Based Violence Survivors Launches in Secunda

As part of Sasol’s Gender-Based Violence and Femicide response plan, a Psychosocial Support Programme was launched in Secunda at the end of November 2025.

The Psychosocial Support Programme, which will run for a period of four years, will provide trauma counselling, emotional support, mental wellness education and sensitisation sessions to local communities, in what is a multi-sectoral approach to tackling the scourge of gender-based violence.

The launch of the programme coincided with the observation of 16 Day of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, which runs from 25 November to 10 December every year.

The establishment of the Psychosocial Support Programme was informed by the outcome of a Sasol baseline study, which revealed a need for psychosocial support for communities around Secunda and Sasolburg. It also identified gaps in access to trauma counselling and coordinated referral systems.

Community organisations had reported being overstretched and inadequately resourced, highlighting the need for a coordinated intervention. The study was carried out through engagements with social workers, NPOs, Thuthuzela Care Centres, the South African Police Services (SAPS) Victim-Friendly Units and other stakeholders.

Programme launch

Sasol launched the programme on 28 November 2025 in eMbalenhle, outside Secunda, teaming up with various stakeholders that provide assistance to survivors of gender-based violence, such as SAPS, Department of Social Development, National Prosecuting Authority, Department of Justice and local Non-Profit Organisations. These organisations play a vital role in assisting those impacted by gender-based violence.

The Psychosocial Support Programme will be implemented in partnership with social welfare organisations across Secunda and Sasolburg and will operate through designated access points in both regions. To ensure the effectiveness of the initiative, ten unemployed youth graduate social workers, 5 from each town, have been enlisted to offer support to survivors, for a period of 2-years.

Another cohort of 10 unemployed youth graduate social workers will be deployed for further period of 2 years. Sasol will also continue with the upgrading of victim friendly rooms at police stations in the respective towns.

The social workers will deliver a suite of services that include:
– Trauma counselling and emotional support
– Crisis intervention and trauma debriefing
– Individual and family support sessions
– Referrals to: Department of Health, Department of Social Development, SAPS and local NPOs.

As part of the recently concluded collaboration agreement between Sasol Qatar, ORYX GTL and Qatar Foundation (QF) for joint execution of CSR initiatives over the next 3 years, Sasol Qatar proudly supported the Ability Friendly Swimming Competition on October 25, 2025. The event was organised by Qatar Foundation’s Ability Friendly Programme under Pre-University Education. The competition brought together around 70 participants of various age groups, along with their families, to celebrate ability, perseverance, and inclusion through sport.

The event reflected QF’s commitment to empowering people with disabilities and promoting equal opportunities through accessible sporting and recreational activities. With Sasol’s support, the programme continues to grow its reach, helping to accommodate more participants and reduce the waiting list of families eager to join.

Dr Pat Skhonde, Senior Business Manager at Sasol Qatar, delivered opening remarks at the event, emphasising Sasol’s long-standing commitment to accessibility and inclusion through its Accessible Qatar and Definitely Able initiatives. He highlighted that the collaboration agreement with QF, alongside ORYX GTL, underscores a shared vision of creating a society where every individual can participate fully and equally.

The competition also welcomed representatives from the Special Olympics and Paralympic committees, with the ambition of seeing individuals from the Ability Friendly Programme eventually representing Qatar in future international competitions.

Families of participants spoke passionately about the life-changing impact of the programme. Many shared that beyond learning a sport, their children have gained greater confidence, independence, and social connections. Parents highlighted how the experience has been transformative, improving not only their children’s physical abilities but also their communication skills, daily routines, and overall sense of belonging within the community.

Through initiatives like this, Sasol Qatar and its partners reaffirm their dedication to supporting inclusive community development and advancing Qatar’s broader vision of accessibility and equal opportunity for all. The Ability Friendly Swimming Competition stands as a powerful example of how collaboration can make lasting impact, in and out of the water.

On 21 October 2025, the #SasolFoundation celebrated bright young innovators at Sasol Place in Johannesburg during the annual Sasol Girls Hackathon, held in recognition of International Day of the Girl Child. The event brought together Grade 8 learners from across South Africa to explore how technology and innovation can solve real-world environmental challenges.

This year’s theme, ‘Sustainability and Air Pollution,’ challenged learners to apply coding, robotics, and data-driven thinking to design creative solutions for cleaner, healthier communities. With guidance from expert mentors from our Digital Studio, as well as educational partners including the Osizweni Science Centre and Boitjhorisong Resource Centre, participants collaborated in teams to tackle hands-on challenges that encouraged problem-solving, innovation, and teamwork.

The hackathon forms part of the Sasol Foundation’s ongoing commitment to advancing STEM education and empowering young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). By nurturing digital skills and curiosity at an early age, we aim to help build a generation ready to lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) – equipped to use technology to create sustainable change.

“The Sasol Girls Hackathon is more than an event; it’s a celebration of every girl’s potential,” said Gao Mothoagae, Vice President: CSI and Sasol Foundation. “It’s our way of saying, you belong here – in Science, in Technology, in Engineering, and in Mathematics. These fields are not just about numbers, formulas, or code; they’re about solving real problems and creating real solutions that can change the world.”

Teachers were celebrated not just as mentors, but as competitors, proving that their technical mastery continues to inspire excellence in classrooms and workshops alike. For TVET students, the event was a bridge between learning and industry readiness, a moment to showcase the potential that lies within South Africa’s vocational education sector.

“The National Skills Competition is not just about medals — it is about building futures,” said Tshamani Mathebula, Head of Sasol Foundation. “Through the Sasol Foundation, we have proudly invested in this initiative since 2018 because we believe in equipping young people, empowering teachers, and strengthening the pipeline of artisans and innovators South Africa urgently needs.”

The competition also challenges perceptions, reminding South Africans that technical and vocational skills are not ‘second best’, but central to growth, innovation and opportunity. It aligns with the country’s three-stream education model and the National Development Plan 2030 target of producing 30,000 artisans annually.

Manie Bohoff, a learner from Mpumalanga, HTS Middleburg, shared, “standing on that stage showed me that my hands can build more than just projects, they can build my future. This competition reminded me that skills are power, and that every young person has something valuable to offer South Africa.”

As the 2025 competition concludes, Sasol Foundation and its partners celebrate not only the winners, but every participant whose courage, creativity and determination reflect the true spirit of South Africa’s future.

Sasol em Moçambique Sponsors the 10th Edition of Mozambique Gas & Energy Summit & Exhibition

Sasol in Mozambique participated as a Platinum Sponsor in the 10th Mozambique Gas & Energy Summit (MGES), held from 22 to 24 September in Maputo.

This event is a premier platform that brings together government representatives, industry leaders, investors, and key stakeholders to explore sustainable strategies for developing Mozambique’s natural gas sector. MGES places strong emphasis on driving economic growth, advancing job creation, and expanding energy access, while upholding environmental responsibility.

A highlight of this year’s edition was the Generation Ready Programme, featured on the opening day. The initiative spotlighted youth employability through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, skills development, and job-readiness training for students and recent graduates. Sasol, in partnership with Field Ready, has actively supported this programme, nurturing young Mozambican talent through mentoring, skills transfer, and career opportunities.

During the Generation Ready sessions, Ovídio Rodolfo, Sasol in Mozambique Country Manager and Vice President, joined a panel discussion to present Sasol’s pillars for human capital development: read here

In a separate engagement, he shared the company’s approach to Community Inclusion and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, guided by the CSR Policy for the Extractive Industry.

On the second day of the summit, Sib Rajab, Sasol Vice President for Regional Operations and Asset Services (ROAS), outlined Sasol’s forward-looking strategy to seize emerging opportunities in Mozambique’s midstream and downstream gas and energy sectors.

Beyond knowledge sharing, the Summit also provided a global perspective on key energy sector achievements and served as a vital platform for networking and engagement with strategic stakeholders, including services providers and media houses.

The Sasol Foundation, in partnership with Kagiso Trust, the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training, has launched the provisional stage of the 2025 National Skills Competition — a nationwide platform designed to showcase and strengthen the technical and vocational talents of South Africa’s youth.

“The Sasol Foundation has been a driving force behind the competition since 2018, investing in technical and vocational education to help close South Africa’s skills gap. By supporting learners, teachers and TVET students, Sasol is building stronger communities and contributing to the country’s future workforce,” said Tshamani Mathebula, Head of the Sasol Foundation.

This crucial stage of the competition brings together learners, teachers and TVET college students from across all nine provinces as they showcase their technical and vocational skills in a wide range of disciplines. It represents an important milestone in identifying the country’s top technical talent, while giving participants the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in real-world, industry-relevant tasks.

Provisional Rounds

The provisional rounds are the foundation of the National Skills Competition. They provide a platform for provincial champions, learners, teachers and TVET students to compete within their own regions before progressing further in their skills development journey.

By competing at this level, participants are not only testing their technical expertise but also building confidence, developing problem-solving abilities, and learning to operate under pressure, all essential qualities for success in the workplace and beyond.

“The provisional stage is where the journey begins for our participants. It is where they build resilience, showcase their creativity, and prove their readiness to be part of South Africa’s skills revolution. As Sasol Foundation, we believe in creating opportunities at every level, because that is how we transform potential into excellence,” said Ms Charlotte Mokoena, Sasol Executive Vice President: Human Resources and Corporate Affairs.

Competitors and categories

This year’s provisional competitions are open to:

Learners from technical schools across all nine provinces,

Teachers who play a critical role in shaping technical education, and

TVET college students from Centres of Specialisation.

Participants are competing in a variety of specialisations, including:

Automotive

Fitting and Machining (Fitter and Turner)

Welding and Metalwork

Electrical Power Systems

Electronics and Digital Systems

Bricklaying and Civil Construction

Plumbing and Civil Services

Woodworking and Rigging

Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD – Manual)

Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

Each of these categories reflects skills that are vital to South Africa’s economy, addressing critical needs in industries such as construction, energy, and manufacturing.

The inclusion of both learners and teachers in the provisional stage is a defining feature of the competition. Teachers are not only mentors but also participants in their own right, competing in specialised categories that highlight their technical knowledge and teaching capabilities.

Teacher Involvement

“The involvement of teachers is particularly important because they are at the heart of skills development. By recognising their role and showcasing their expertise, we are reinforcing the importance of strong technical education in schools and colleges,” explained Ms Gao Mothoagae, Sasol Vice President: Corporate Social Investment and Sasol Foundation.

At the heart of the provisional competitions is the focus on practical, hands-on skills. Tasks are drawn from real-life, industry-based scenarios, ensuring that participants are tested on the kinds of challenges they would face in the workplace. This approach strengthens the link between education and employment, helping to close the gap between what learners are taught and what industry requires.

The competition also aligns with national priorities by:

Supporting the three-stream model in education, which balances academic, technical/vocational, and occupational pathways.

Contributing to the National Development Plan 2030 goal of producing 30,000 artisans annually.

Fostering inclusivity by providing opportunities to learners and educators from diverse backgrounds and communities.

Sasol Breaks Ground on New Water Supply System in Inhassoro

Sasol in Mozambique proceeded, on 6 August, with the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Baule Water Supply System in Inhassoro district, Inhambane province. The infrastructure, financed under the Local Development Agreements (ADL), will benefit the communities of Macovane, Vuca and northern Vulanjane through a 16-kilometre pipeline, three boreholes, a steel water tower with a capacity of 80,000 litres and 16 public standpipes, all powered by solar energy. The system will provide sustainable access to clean drinking water for around 1,000 families.

The system forms part of a broader effort undertaken through the initial LDAs, which have already enabled the rehabilitation of 14 existing systems, the drilling of 23 new boreholes, and the restoration of 100 manual wells across the districts of Govuro and Inhassoro. Out of the 13 planned major systems, 11 have already been completed, seven (7) in Inhassoro and four (4) in Govuro. Construction is currently under way on the Maluvane system in Govuro and the Baule system in Inhassoro.

For the Country Director of Sasol in Mozambique, Ovídio Rodolfo, the delivery of this infrastructure marks a new phase in the company’s commitment to the communities. “It is a transition into ADL II, with more ambitious goals and broader impact,” he emphasised.

The Administrator of Inhassoro District, Fernando Doda Muzonbigua, highlighted the project’s direct contribution to the lives of local residents. “It is an important step towards improving access to water and promoting local development,” he stated.

Community leader Paiva Nhocane also reinforced the social impact of the initiative. “This action brings dignity, health and hope to many families,” he said.

Over the past five years, Sasol has invested US$20 million in the districts of Govuro and Inhassoro, focusing on priority areas such as access to water, education, infrastructure, and community health. With the new Local Development Agreements (ADL II) already signed, the programme will be extended to three districts and approximately 70 communities, with the budget doubled and access to clean water remaining one of the central priorities.

Sasol Delivers New School Block in Inhassoro

Sasol Mozambique has handed over a new classroom block to the Mangarelane 1 community in Inhassoro District, benefiting more than 100 pupils. Delivered on 4 August 2025, the project, part of the Local Development Agreements (ADL), includes fully equipped classrooms and an administrative wing, significantly improving local learning conditions.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Senior Manger Mozambique Corporate Affairs, Mateus Mosse, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainable development. “This initiative supports the Government’s broader efforts to expand access to education in rural areas,” he said.

Representing the district government, Tenito Machava, Director of Inhassoro’s District Planning and Infrastructure Services, described the school as the fruit of strong collaboration. “This is a shared effort between Government and Sasol. It will ease overcrowding and raise education standards. Pupils, teachers, and the wider community all stand to benefit,” he noted.

Local Community Leader, Paiva Zivane, welcomed the gesture: “We are grateful to Sasol for their willingness to support projects that bring real change to our community, like this classroom block.”

This follows the delivery of five similar school blocks in 2024 across other communities in Inhassoro, underscoring Sasol’s continued investment in education as a driver of social transformation.
