Sasol Delivers Food Hampers

Sasol delivers food hampers to welfare groups, makes every day a Mandela Day

Sasol through the Sasol For Good initiative continues to demonstrate the Mandela values of compassion and restoring human dignity. This initiative has been driving the distributing food hampers and winter clothing items to vulnerable communities and welfare organisations across the country in different parts of Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. The food hampers were being distributed were part of the 3 000 hampers packed by Sasol employees during Mandela Day on 18 July.

On Mandela Day, Sasol employees rolled-up their sleeves on Mandela Day for #67minutes to make a difference to beneficiaries in Sasol’s fenceline communities.

This focus of year’s Mandela Day initiatives was food security, an important issue affecting many vulnerable groups, specifically child or elderly headed households. This theme was the continuation of our 2023 focus on programmes fighting against the scourge of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

The distribution of Mandela Day hampers continued during the month of August, with Sasol in partnership with the Department of Social Development and local municipalities. The beneficiaries were making a stop at various welfare centres and communities.

On 15 August, 400 food hampers were delivered to welfare organisations in Hectorspruit, in Mpumalanga’s Nkomazi region. A similar handover took place in Sharpeville in Gauteng, at The Vaal Echos of Love Old Age Home, where 100 food hampers were delivered to the elderly residents on 22 August.

The Hectorspruit and Sharpeville handover events included the donation of warm clothing items such as blankets, beanies and scarves. These were part of the Winter Warmer initiative, which is supported by donations from Sasol employees.

Communities in KwaZulu-Natal were also not left behind, as Sasol visited Nseleni and Nongoma in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The KwaZulu-Natal Mandela Day handover events, held on 23- 24 August, were attended by the MEC of Social Development Mbali Shinga, whose department assisted with identifying the people needing relief from the recent natural disasters such as storms, floods and veld fires that have hit the province. A total of 500 food hampers were distributed.

Over the past few years, and through Mandela Day initiatives that support different social causes, Sasol has demonstrated its promise to society locally by:

  • Delivering 32 000 meal packs to Early Childhood Development Centres | 2022
  • Handing out 2 350 hospital bags to new mothers | 2023
  • Packing nearly 3 000 food hampers for welfare centres | 2024

This is one example which demonstrates that it is indeed possible to make every single day a Mandela Day.
