Since 2022, our Sasol Andrew Mapheto franchisee has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to community upliftment in Tembisa and the surrounding areas. The franchisee has actively participated in Sasol’s Friendly Neighbour Scorecard initiatives and has continued to support a range of projects aimed at improving the lives of local residents.

A key highlight of this partnership includes the donation of approximately 1,000 school uniforms to learners from schools in and around Tembisa. This initiative has helped to ease financial pressure on families while ensuring that learners are able to attend school with dignity and confidence. Supporting access to education remains a core priority for Sasol, as we recognise its role in enabling long-term opportunity and development.

At Sasol, we are committed to building and strengthening the communities around our operations through meaningful, sustainable partnerships. The Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme is one of the ways we bring this commitment to life, enabling Sasol Energy and our franchise partners to work together to respond to the needs of communities surrounding Sasol Convenience Centres (SCCs).

Through this programme, franchisees identify local community development opportunities based on the lived realities within their areas of operation. Sasol then provides support through a 50% co-funding matching grant, enabling the joint implementation of projects that deliver lasting impact in key focus areas such as education, health, skills development, and community welfare. This shared-value approach ensures that interventions are both relevant and sustainable.

Sparks of hope and possibility lit up Newton Pre-Vocational Technical School on Friday, 6 March 2026, as Sasol Energy’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) team joined learners for a memorable Back to School handover. With new shoes laced and school bags slung over shoulders, the day marked more than just the start of a school year, it was a celebration of dignity, opportunity, and the power of education to transform lives.

As part of the Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) Ministerial Back to School Campaign, Sasol donated 400 pairs of school shoes and 400 school bags to learners, easing the financial burden on families and ensuring that every child can step into the classroom with confidence.

The event was filled with excitement and gratitude, as learners experienced firsthand the impact of community support. For many, the donation will make a meaningful difference in their daily routines, reinforcing the message that their education matters.

The school’s management expressed heartfelt appreciation, noting the difference this support will make in helping learners focus on their studies. For the learners of Newton Pre-Vocational Technical School, the day was about more than receiving new items, it was a reminder that their future is worth investing in.

Through initiatives like this, Sasol Energy continues to demonstrate that its responsibility extends beyond operations. By investing in education and empowering young people, Sasol is helping to build a brighter, more sustainable future for South Africa.

At Sasol, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn with confidence and dignity. That’s why, as we hit the road for our #SasolMzansiTour 2.0, we’re taking more than just a scenic journey along South Africa’s breathtaking coastline — we’re taking meaningful steps to uplift our communities and open doors to brighter futures.

From 10 to 16 April 2025, our Sasol Mzansi Tour 2.0 winners, along with our influencers, embarked on an unforgettable seven-day adventure. Together, we’ll explore the rich beauty, culture, and heritage of our nation, experiencing local tourist hotspots, indulging in authentic South African cuisine, and enjoying premium accommodation that showcases the best of what our country has to offer.

But the heart of this tour goes beyond the sights and sounds. It’s about making a real difference. As part of our commitment to social upliftment, we’re proud to be donating 1 200 school uniforms to learners from underprivileged backgrounds in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. For many families, the cost of a school uniform is an overwhelming expense, and we’re determined to help change that.

Our winners and influencers will join us at Sekelani Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal to hand over these uniforms personally. It’s a moment of connection, where we’ll engage with students, teachers, and community members, sharing in the excitement and hope that education brings.

As Sarel Booyens, Head of our South African Corporate Social Investment Programme Execution, puts it:
“Millions of children face financial barriers that prevent them from accessing education fully — something as simple as not having a school uniform can hold them back. Through this initiative, we want to give learners the confidence and dignity they deserve, helping improve attendance and academic performance.”

This donation isn’t just about clothing. It’s about nurturing pride, promoting equality, and building a sense of belonging in the classroom. Mrs LL Radebe, Acting Principal at Sekelani Primary School, captured it perfectly:
“Uniforms promote unity and equality within the school environment. Providing students with school uniforms does more than just meet a basic need; it instils a sense of pride and belonging, which is essential for learners’ personal and academic growth.”

We’re also extending this support to Sakhikamva High School in the Eastern Cape. Mr Lucky Macozoma, Sakhiamva High School Principle, shared his thoughts:
“Uniforms help to create a more positive and focused learning atmosphere. This initiative will help reduce any feelings of stigma or exclusion among students who cannot afford uniforms, contributing to a more inclusive school environment.”

For us at Sasol, initiatives like this are deeply personal. They reflect our values, our commitment to community upliftment, and our belief in the power of education to transform lives. Through the Sasol Mzansi Tour 2.0, we’re not just fueling cars — we’re fueling futures.

Sasol Energy Marketing and Sales is partnering with youth health non-profit organisation (NGO), loveLife, to address Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in Gauteng. This 3-year national initiative focuses on raising awareness and providing care and support to victims in communities near Sasol retails sites, starting in Gauteng in areas including Diepsloot, Alexandra, Tembisa, Honeydew, Mamelodi and Soweto.

Sasol will sponsor loveLife’s new mobile unit that will be staffed with a counsellor and a registered nurse to offer free, confidential, and inclusive support, counselling, educational and healthcare services to GBVF victims and their family members. The mobile unit will operate Monday to Friday, rotating between the six sites, starting at Diepsloot from 8 to 12 July. loveLife promotions agents, known as Groundbreakers, will also be on hand to raise awareness and encourage people to seek help from the mobile units. loveLife has also engaged social health partners to provide support for referrals and to evaluate the services that the mobile clinic renders to the community.

Zanele Hadebe, Vice President for Marketing, Sasol Energy Marketing and Sales says: “In a country identified as one of the most violent places in the world, there is an urgent need to address toxic social norms and gender inequality that increase the prevalence of gender-based violence and femicide.

It’s also essential to provide holistic psychosocial support for people whose lives have been shattered by Gender-Based Violence and Femicide. We are proud to collaborate with loveLife to address GBVF in some of the most affected communities, fostering safer environments, building awareness, and ultimately helping to prevent GBVF.”

loveLife, headquartered in Sandton, Gauteng, operates across all nine provinces of South Africa, delivering comprehensive youth health services through its national network of 24 Youth Centres. These centres provide educational, recreational, and sexual health services, aligning with the World Health Organization’s definition of youth health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.

loveLife’s Dr. Doreen Kosi, Acting Chief Executive Officer added, “This partnership with Sasol allows us to extend our reach and impact significantly. By combining our expertise with Sasol’s commitment to social impact, we can make a difference in the fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide and support especially young people in their journey towards a safer and healthier life.”

Pillsbury Child Care Centre is a Day Care and Boarding Schooling NPO that supports children living with disabilities by providing cognitive stimulation, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and sign language. The facility is a reputable childcare entity that provides high-quality care and education to physically impaired children between the ages of 4 to 19. Pillsbury offers a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn and grow, with a focus on promoting their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.

In ensuring the day is delightful, other Sasol Bowling convenience center key stakeholders such as Rolling Chicken company, RFP Distributors, Super Group, Ola and Nestle also supported the initiative by donating lunch packs for the handover event which took place on Wednesday, 10 April 2024.

In seeing the dire need of the facility, Rolling Chicken committed to a year’s supply of chicken to the centre. We are delighted by this partnership and will continue to share more stories of the magnificent work our franchisee network is doing with communities.

Through a partnership with Sasol Tzaneen, Sasol Watermeyer and Sasol Gordon Road over 1000 underprivileged primary school learners from the Tzaneen, Sigagule Village and Witbank communities were provided with a school kitbag containing shoes, a jersey, socks, tracksuit set, pants for boy and tunics for the girl learners, and a school bag each. This donation, that was done as part of the “back-to-school” campaign contributed to restoring the dignity of the young learners, by equipping them with the prerequisite basic tools for school.

Through the Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme, Sasol Energy continues to make a positive impact by supporting communities that are in close proximity to its participating retail sites. As part of this social impact initiative, Sasol Pinehaven donated educational Christmas packs aimed at uplifting the spirits of children during the festive season to Simunye: We Are One Projects. The donation handover event took place on the 14th of December in Muldersdrift. Simunye is a Non-Profit Organisation that assists 0-6 year-old children from disadvantaged backgrounds in the Krugersdorp area through food provision and Early Childhood Development.

Sasol Energy is proud to have delighted more than 50 children, who benefitted from this donation, which has brought hope and joy to those who ordinarily do not experience the cheer and excitement that comes with the festive season.

In support of the initiative, various Sasol Pinehaven’s suppliers heeded the call and joined forces to make the event bigger and better by donating lunch for the day. The sponsors included Rolling Chicken, Ola Ice Cream, Magpie, Lettuce Eat, SG Convenience, Twizza (Pty)Ltd , ABI, RCL Foods (Pieman’s) as well as Clover SA proving once again that collaboration is the cornerstone of community upliftment and that it truly does take a village to make a bigger impact.

The Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme is a Social Impact initiative aimed at uplifting and improving the lives of those who live near Sasol’s Retail sites and is primarily targeted at those who are less privileged. Sasol Energy matches franchisee proposal or co-created concept rand-for-rand on initiatives focusing on education, health, safety, environment, work skills development, and philanthropic interventions.

As part of the Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme, Sasol King Shaka Airport donated cognitive stimulating children’s educational learning material to Hillbilly Pre-Primary School based in Tongaat community, KwaZulu-Natal. This handover was done in an effort to improve the quality of education and to encourage the development of young, curious minds by learning through play. Early Childhood Development (ECD) is one of Sasol’s social impact priorities, under the education pillar. Interventions in the ECD centers aim to strengthen learning and development for children at their foundation phase. The event took place on August 24, 2023, held at the school.

This is in line with the 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4), which seeks to ensure that there is inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning for all, as well as the National Development (NDP) mandate to provide every child with a minimum of two years of pre-primary school exposure before they enter basic schooling.

The Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme is a Social Impact initiative aimed at uplifting and improving the lives of those who reside in close proximity to Sasol’s Retail sites, primarily targeting those who are less privileged. Sasol matches franchisee proposals or co-created concept rand-for-rand on initiatives focusing on education, health, safety, environment, work skills development, and philanthropic interventions.

There are over 40 learners who received educational material including puzzles, books, construction toys, fantasy toys, musical instruments, and outdoor toys such as tricycles and sandpits amongst others.

A donation of R3000 cash towards fuel, through the franchisee’s personal network, was also made to assist the centre transport the children to school more regularly.

Through the Sasol Friendly Neighbour programme, our retailers and partner NPOs develop programmes that address the emotional, psychological, and educational needs of the children that they look after, many of whom come from child-headed households as a result of crime, the COVID-19 pandemic, Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) as well as the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The NPOs, through the support of various donors, strive to maintain a therapeutic environment that offers a real chance of breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect to achieve family reunification and reintegration into the community.

According to Abey Tau Social Investment Manager for the Energy Business, “The Friendly Neighbour Concept is one of our social impact initiatives through which Sasol matches our franchisee proposal rand-for-rand in order to heighten our retail sites’ corporate citizenship status. The concept is about co-creating socio-economic activities within a specified radius of our retail sites, focusing on community development programmes in line with Sasol’s Social Investment pillars”.

Education is one of Sasol’s key pillars in our Corporate Social Investment strategy and one of the programmes supported under this is Early Childhood Development (ECD).

The aim of the ECD programme is to improve access to quality early learning opportunities for children in the communities closest to our operations and retail sites. This is in line with one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; as well as the National Development Plan’s (NDP) mandate to provide every child with a minimum of two years of pre-primary school exposure before they enter basic schooling.

At Sasol, we believe that education is fundamental to transforming our society and that ECDs must be strengthened to provide a strong foundation for learning and development. Access to adequate and consistent nutritional and literacy support is crucial, which is why the Sasol ECD programme has taken on different multiple interventions to mitigate literacy and nutrition risks.

The Social Impact team at Sasol was approached by our Sasol Hammersdale franchisee, through the Friendly Neighbour Programme, to support the Devine Connection Pre-School in Hammersdale with learning material. This preschool is situated 5km from the retail site, in the community of Georgedale.

As part of the Friendly Neighbour concept, Sasol matches a franchisee proposal or co-created concept rand-for-rand. Through this programme, and with the Sasol Hammersdale franchisee, we are providing learning material to the Devine Connection Pre-School in Hammersdale. Sasol Hammersdale will be donating mattresses, educational materials, A4 printing papers, hand paints, as well as paint for the classrooms.

Sasol donates school uniform kits to deserving Tzaneen and Tembisa learners

As part of its continued drive to support the communities in which it has Retail Convenience Centres (RCCs), Sasol Energy Business recently partnered with three of its franchisees, Sasol Tzaneen, Sasol Andrew Mapheto and Sasol Tembisa, to hand over school shoes to over 800 children from an orphanage and 10 schools in the Greater Tzaneen and school uniforms to over 100 children from six primary schools in Tembisa.

This project is funded under the umbrella of Sasol’s Friendly Neighbour social impact programme with retailers and, in this instance, addresses needs identified in child-headed households and families who cannot afford school uniforms due to unemployment. Beneficiaries who received school shoes in Tzaneen include Noah’s Ark orphanage, Gavaza Primary School and Semana Primary School, Bessie Maake High School, Maake Primary School, Maaroboni Primary School, Phangasasa High School, Makgotlo Pramary School, Nelson Ramodike High School, Rita Primary School and Sepeke Primary School.

Tembisa recipients include learners from Emmangweni, Nyiko, Isiziba, Phuthumani, Khatlamping and Moduopo Primary Schools. These selected learners received a kitbag containing shoes, a jersey, socks, a tracksuit set, pants and shirts for the boys and tunics for the girls, as well a school bag each.

Prior to the donation, the Sasol Energy Business and its Tembisa franchisees engaged the Ekurhuleni Department of Social Development to identify generally underserved households and child-headed households in Tembisa who needed support in the form of school uniforms.

Ekurhuleni Divisional Head: Social Development, Lucky Tsekeli, commended the programme and added: “poor socioeconomic backgrounds greatly impact learners and interventions like this help reduce barriers to learning for these learners.”

According to Gaopaleloe Mothoagae, Vice President Corporate Social Investment & Sasol Foundation, many families are affected by unemployment. “The beginning of the academic year posed yet another challenge for these families who had to secure school uniforms, which Sasol has now provided to bring some relief and to serve as encouragement for young and talented learners”, said Gaopaleloe.

“As franchisees, we are delighted that, through the Friendly Neighbour Initiative, we are able to partner with Sasol to be a force for good in our fenceline communities”, says David Pooe, franchisee at Sasol’s Andrew Maphetho RCC. “The initiative is about co-creating socio-economic activities within a specified radius of a Sasol RCC, focusing on community development programmes such as health, environment and work skills development”, Pooe added.

Sasol’s Friendly Neighbour Concept is a social impact initiative designed to uplift fenceline communities around Sasol’s RCCs in collaboration with franchise owners. Sasol reviews franchisee proposals to uplift their communities and matches the franchisee proposal or co-created concept on approval.

Sasol Energy Business supports Early Childhood Centre infrastructure upliftment in the Greater Tzaneen municipality, Limpopo.

For many years, Sasol has supported a comprehensive approach to Early Childhood Development (ECD). The approach consists of learner support interventions, entailing the provision of nutrition; an inclusive child-centered learning programme and parental support; practitioner training, including accredited skills-based activities, infrastructure and environment improvement; the provision of learning resources; as well as management and leadership support.

On Friday, 17 February 2023, the Sasol Energy Business, and its partner For Africa handed over the newly-renovated Bonolo Day Care Centre in Sethong Village, Tzaneen.
In addition to the Bonolo Centre, due to increasing instances of undernourishment as a result of children living in households which reported hunger, the programme was extended to provide daily nutritious meals and the installation of food gardens for a total of 12 ECD centres looking after 400 children in the Greater Tzaneen municipality.

Sasol, in partnership with its Retail Convenience Centre (RCC) Sasol Marlboro Gardens in Sandton, Johannesburg has provided financial support valued at R190 000 to 6 registered Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) under the banner of its Friendly Neighbour social impact initiative.

Sasol’s Friendly Neighbour concept is a social impact initiative designed to uplift fenceline communities around Sasol’s RCCs in collaboration with franchise owners. This initiative focused on Alexandra as the township is in proximity of Sasol’s headquarters in Sandton. Our commitment to society is to contribute to positive social change in the lives of people where we operate, and this partnership is one of many that honours that commitment.

During December last year, Sasol ran a time-bound call for funding campaign in Alexandra where registered NPOs were invited to submit funding proposals. This initiative was largely driven through Alex FM, a local community radio station serving the community of Alexandra. Funding proposals were requested for support in the fields of Nutrition, Mental Health, Gender Based Violence (GBV) or Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), HIV/AIDS, and Disability.

It is almost two years since the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact has been dire with mental health being unprecedented in scale. During this period, Gender-based violence (GBV) or violence against women and girls (VAWG) also increased. Similarly, the most vulnerable of society, persons living with disabilities are always bearing the brunt. The complexities people with disabilities face are not always top of mind and therefore enable barriers for social inclusion. With all these challenges, Sasol wanted to engage, amongst others, NGOs that aim to address most of these issues.

According to Palesa Mokaba, Vice-President of Marketing: Sasol Energy Business, Sasol is a force for good in its communities and partners with community organisations to drive meaningful and sustainable change.

Said Mokaba: “Many businesses and households have been hit hard by the social and financial instability as well as implications of the global pandemic, with some families struggling just to put bread on the table to survive. At the forefront in supporting these families are NPOs who have seen a drastic decline in donations while their services are more in demand than ever. These partnerships that we concluded in Alexandra allow community organisations to stretch their resources further to support their communities.”

The 6 community-based organisations that received funding are:

Phuthaditjhaba Old Age and Disabled Care, which serves vulnerable groups including the elderly and the disabled in Alexandra. The centre operates a satellite clinic, library, a community boardroom, community hall and support the community through a funded soup kitchen. The centre received a grant of R30 000 from Sasol.

Sasol donates school uniform kits to deserving Tembisa learners

Sasol continues to respond to the needs of its communities, on 31 January 2022 Sasol in partnership with 2 Sasol Retail Convenience Centre (RCC) franchisees Andrew Maphetho RCC and Sasol Tembisa RCC handed over school uniform kits to over 70 children from five primary schools in Tembisa.

Uniform kits handed over to learners

This initiative to support the children is funded under the umbrella of Sasol’s Friendly Neighbour retail social impact initiative and, in this instance, addresses needs identified in families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the job loss devastation following the July riots. Beneficiaries include learners from Gahlanso, Moduopo, Umthambeka, Welamlambo and Simphiwe Primary Schools in Tembisa. The selected learners received a school uniform kit-bag containing shoes, a jersey, socks, tracksuit set, pants for boy and tunics for the girl learners, and a school bag each.

Leading up to the donation, Sasol Energy Business and its Tembisa franchisees engaged the Ekurhuleni Department of Social Development and various non-governmental organisations to identify generally underserved households and child-headed households in Tembisa that would need support in the form of school uniforms.

According to Palesa Mokaba, Vice-President of Marketing for Sasol’s Energy Business, many families were affected by hard lockdowns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic – the social unrest that followed in July 2021 was yet another blow for struggling families. “The beginning of the academic year posed yet another challenge for these families who had to secure school uniforms which Sasol has now provided to bring some relief and to serve as encouragement for young and talented learners”, said Mokaba.

Learners receiving their uniform kits

“As Franchisees we are delighted that, through the Friendly Neighbour Initiative, we are able to partner with Sasol to be a force for good in our fenceline communities”, says David Pooe, franchisee at Sasol’s Andrew Maphetho RCC. “The initiative is about co-creating socio-economic activities within a specified radius of a Sasol RCC focusing on community development programmes such as health, environment and work skills development”, Pooe added.

Sasol’s Friendly Neighbour Concept is a social impact initiative designed to uplift fenceline communities around Sasol’s RCC’s in collaboration with franchise owners. Sasol reviews franchisee proposals to uplift their communities and on approval matches the franchisee proposal or co-created concept.

A simple wrong turn resulted in expectant mother Phumi Mahlambi, who was on route to hospital with labour pains, ending up at Sasol Swartgoud in Mondeor, Johannesburg where she unexpectedly went into labour and gave birth to her new baby son, Lwandle

On hearing her call for help, Phumi and her mother immediately received assistance from Sasol Swartgoud Franchise owner, Letitia Visser and her team who called in emergency services and an ambulance.

Sasol Swartgoud and Sasol are delighted to hear that both Phumi and Lwandle are both healthy and are both recovering at home after the miracle birth. Team Sasol is so pleased that we were able to assist the mother and child during this emergency. It was a truly unique event, one that Sasol would like to celebrate and remember with the family.

As a caring organisation, Sasol has decided to support the family further through its Friendly Neighbour initiative, which is a unique Sasol concept. Sasol and its Retail Convenience Centres are customer centric and integral to the communities that it serves, not only in products and services, but also in delivering social impact initiatives that contribute to the upliftment of the communities that it serves.

Says Palesa Mokaba, Vice President of Marketing at Sasol Energy Business: “Through Sasol’s Friendly Neighbour social impact initiative Sasol matches acceptable franchisee proposals for support or co-creates concepts and matches rand-for-rand up to an amount of R20,000 per initiative. We applaud Sasol Swartgoud Franchisee Letitia Visser for her recommendation and making R10 000 in cash available to support baby Lwandle. Under the Friendly Neighbour campaign, Sasol has matched the amount and R20 000 has been paid over to Phumi Mahlambi.”
