Sasolburg, Free State – Sasol, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, has launched a comprehensive oral health campaign in Zamdela, Metsimaholo. The Sasol School Oral Health Campaign commenced on 8 April and will run until 29 May 2026.

Over the eight-week period, the programme will reach approximately 8 000 learners from Grade R to Grade 3 across 11 primary schools. The initiative forms part of Sasol’s broader commitment to supporting health and education in the communities in which it operates.

The campaign combines preventative health services with educational interventions. During school-based sessions, learners are taught about the importance of oral health and the daily habits required to maintain healthy teeth and gums. To reinforce these lessons, each learner receives age-appropriate educational material on oral health, as well as a toothbrush and toothpaste.

In addition to awareness education, preventative health support is provided through basic oral health screening. Learners identified as requiring further medical attention are referred to appropriate health services, helping to ensure that emerging oral health issues are addressed early.

According to Dr Nontokozo Xaba, Manager: Sasolburg and Ekandustria Regional Corporate Social Investment Execution, Sasol is cognisant of the significant barriers to healthcare faced by many children. Children in many communities face limited access to preventive services such as oral health education, oral hygiene support and basic health screening. “These barriers can indirectly negatively impact school attendance, learning ability and overall wellbeing. The Sasol School Oral Health Campaign, through our implementing partner, Starfish Greathearts Foundation, aims to address these challenges by delivering health support interventions directly within schools, ensuring that children receive preventative care and health education in a safe and accessible environment”, said Dr Xaba.

Through this campaign, Sasol and the Department of Basic Education aim to promote lifelong healthy habits, support learner wellbeing and contribute to improved educational outcomes in the community around Sasol operations.

The 4IR Laboratory provides students and lecturers with hands‑on training in key digital and technical disciplines, including coding, robotics and simulations, CNC machining and 3D printing, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), app development and data science applications. The facility is designed to support curriculum integration and prepare students for the evolving world of work.

The initiative forms part of the Sasol Foundation’s education strategy to strengthen post‑school technical institutions, support youth employability and contribute to long‑term human capital development.

“TVET colleges play a critical role in building South Africa’s skills base, yet many lack access to modern technology,” said Ms Thabile Makgala, Executive Vice President: SHE, Risk and Corporate Affairs at Sasol. “Through the Sasol Foundation, we are investing in practical, future‑focused skills that enable students and lecturers to participate meaningfully in a digital economy.”

On Tuesday, 13 January 2026, Sasol awarded cash incentives totalling R 200 000 to top-performing matriculants from Mpumalanga schools. The awards were extended during the announcement of Grade 12 provincial results at a ceremony held in Secunda. The 20 beneficiaries of the awards were five top performing learners in Mathematics, Physical Science, Technical Mathematics and Technical Science, who each received a sum R10 000. The funds will go towards the learners’ registration fees at any recognised South African institution of higher education.

Awarding top-achievers is in line with Sasol’s strategic objective of supporting the teaching of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in schools. This act also aims to encourage more learners to study these subjects.

Over the years, Sasol has made considerable investments in education through various initiatives such as merit bursaries, sponsorship of mobile science labs to under resourced schools, Sasol Energy Innovation Challenge, the National Skills Competition. These initiatives play a vital role in enabling excellence in science education.

The sponsorship of the provincial Grade 12 Awards is part of a long-standing partnership with the National Department of Education. In Mpumalanga, Sasol has been hosting Grade 12 Merit Awards in Secunda for the past 30 years, where learners from various districts are recognised and awarded for their outstanding performance. This year, Sasol will continue to recognise top achievers at district level across the province.

On 21 October 2025, the #SasolFoundation celebrated bright young innovators at Sasol Place in Johannesburg during the annual Sasol Girls Hackathon, held in recognition of International Day of the Girl Child. The event brought together Grade 8 learners from across South Africa to explore how technology and innovation can solve real-world environmental challenges.

This year’s theme, ‘Sustainability and Air Pollution,’ challenged learners to apply coding, robotics, and data-driven thinking to design creative solutions for cleaner, healthier communities. With guidance from expert mentors from our Digital Studio, as well as educational partners including the Osizweni Science Centre and Boitjhorisong Resource Centre, participants collaborated in teams to tackle hands-on challenges that encouraged problem-solving, innovation, and teamwork.

The hackathon forms part of the Sasol Foundation’s ongoing commitment to advancing STEM education and empowering young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). By nurturing digital skills and curiosity at an early age, we aim to help build a generation ready to lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) – equipped to use technology to create sustainable change.

The Sasol Foundation, in partnership with Kagiso Trust, the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training, has launched the provisional stage of the 2025 National Skills Competition — a nationwide platform designed to showcase and strengthen the technical and vocational talents of South Africa’s youth.

“The Sasol Foundation has been a driving force behind the competition since 2018, investing in technical and vocational education to help close South Africa’s skills gap. By supporting learners, teachers and TVET students, Sasol is building stronger communities and contributing to the country’s future workforce,” said Tshamani Mathebula, Head of the Sasol Foundation.

This crucial stage of the competition brings together learners, teachers and TVET college students from across all nine provinces as they showcase their technical and vocational skills in a wide range of disciplines. It represents an important milestone in identifying the country’s top technical talent, while giving participants the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in real-world, industry-relevant tasks.

Provisional Rounds

The provisional rounds are the foundation of the National Skills Competition. They provide a platform for provincial champions, learners, teachers and TVET students to compete within their own regions before progressing further in their skills development journey.

By competing at this level, participants are not only testing their technical expertise but also building confidence, developing problem-solving abilities, and learning to operate under pressure, all essential qualities for success in the workplace and beyond.

“The provisional stage is where the journey begins for our participants. It is where they build resilience, showcase their creativity, and prove their readiness to be part of South Africa’s skills revolution. As Sasol Foundation, we believe in creating opportunities at every level, because that is how we transform potential into excellence,” said Ms Charlotte Mokoena, Sasol Executive Vice President: Human Resources and Corporate Affairs.

Competitors and categories

This year’s provisional competitions are open to:

Learners from technical schools across all nine provinces,

Teachers who play a critical role in shaping technical education, and

TVET college students from Centres of Specialisation.

Participants are competing in a variety of specialisations, including:

Automotive

Fitting and Machining (Fitter and Turner)

Welding and Metalwork

Electrical Power Systems

Electronics and Digital Systems

Bricklaying and Civil Construction

Plumbing and Civil Services

Woodworking and Rigging

Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD – Manual)

Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

Each of these categories reflects skills that are vital to South Africa’s economy, addressing critical needs in industries such as construction, energy, and manufacturing.

The inclusion of both learners and teachers in the provisional stage is a defining feature of the competition. Teachers are not only mentors but also participants in their own right, competing in specialised categories that highlight their technical knowledge and teaching capabilities.

Teacher Involvement

“The involvement of teachers is particularly important because they are at the heart of skills development. By recognising their role and showcasing their expertise, we are reinforcing the importance of strong technical education in schools and colleges,” explained Ms Gao Mothoagae, Sasol Vice President: Corporate Social Investment and Sasol Foundation.

At the heart of the provisional competitions is the focus on practical, hands-on skills. Tasks are drawn from real-life, industry-based scenarios, ensuring that participants are tested on the kinds of challenges they would face in the workplace. This approach strengthens the link between education and employment, helping to close the gap between what learners are taught and what industry requires.

The competition also aligns with national priorities by:

Supporting the three-stream model in education, which balances academic, technical/vocational, and occupational pathways.

Contributing to the National Development Plan 2030 goal of producing 30,000 artisans annually.

Fostering inclusivity by providing opportunities to learners and educators from diverse backgrounds and communities.

On Friday 14 February 2025 Sasol donated desks and chairs to two community learning centres in the Vaal Triangle.

Sasol provided 400 chairs and desks to the Oasis of Praise Community Centre, a non-profit organisation in Sedibeng. The centre renders services to learners across the Free State, North West, and Gauteng provinces and has a mandate to accommodate 400 learners in writing their pre-entry university examinations. The donation enables the centre to accommodate these learners and to play a pivotal role in having them accepted into tertiary institutions.

This centre, that focuses on adult education, was built by Sasol and officially handed over to the Free State Department of Education in 2024. The new centre however lacked the required furniture to allow for full utilisation of the new facility. Sasol augmented its original donation, making a further contribution to the centre by providing the required pieces of furniture.

According to Tshamani Mathebula, Head Sasol Foundation, the company is committed to being a catalyst for positive change and driving shared socio-economic value, with a strong focus on improving educational infrastructure.

“Sasol aims to enhance educational outcomes by supplying essential resources for learners. In addition, a recent baseline study done by Sasol recommended the review and allocation of resources to improve direct impacts of education programmes in our fenceline communities such as the Vaal Triangle. We trust that the donation of these desks and chairs will augment the learning experience and academic success of learners and students making use of the centres’ services,” said Mathebula.

This year’s Sasol Grade 12 Merit Awards marked a 30-year milestone of rewarding excellence in matric performance.

Held in Secunda on 24 January, the awards are a highlight of the matric results season and reward Grade 12 top achievers with bursaries cash incentives and certificates of recognition, with a focus on who obtained distinctions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and other non-STEM subjects.

The learners recognised in the Sasol Grade 12 Merit Awards are from schools in Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, Dipaleseng Local Municipality, Lekwa Municipality, Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality, Nkomazi Municipality and part of Mbombela Municipality.

A total of four bursaries were awarded to top achievers, with 73 top achievers receiving cash incentives. The funds go towards each recipient’s university registration fees.

A total of 313 learners in the Standerton Sub-District, eManzana and Ehlanzeni fenceline schools received a cash award per distinction for achieving a minimum of 3 distinctions in identified subject.

“As part of Sasol’s education strategy, we will continue to support STEM education from Grade R to 12 to prepare our learners for the future world of work and increase the pool of learners with subjects relevant for scarce skills,” said Khumbulani Cele, Senior Vice President Secunda Operations.

Africa’s premier solar car event, the Sasol Solar Challenge (SSC), returns for its 16th year in September 2024, promising an exhilarating blend of innovation, competition, and sustainability. With a striking new route, record-breaking female participation, and participation from the world’s leading solar car teams, the SSC is set to solidify its place among the top solar events globally.

Discover the All-New 2024 Route: A Journey Through South Africa’s Scenic Heartland

This year’s SSC unveils a brand-new route that takes competitors on an epic journey from Secunda, Mpumalanga, to the vibrant city of Cape Town. This 8 day challenge will test the limits of solar technology against South Africa’s most challenging and beautiful terrains. The route promises to be the most scenic yet, offering breathtaking views that will captivate competitors and spectators alike. This unique route not only adds to the technical difficulty of the challenge but also enhances the visual appeal, making it a must-see event both on the ground and online.

Meet the Teams: Champions Return for the Ultimate Solar Showdown

The 2024 SSC will feature 14 top-tier local and international teams, including the reigning champions and top contenders from the World Solar Challenge. These teams, renowned for their engineering prowess and strategic innovation, will push the boundaries of what solar-powered vehicles can achieve. The participation of these world-class competitors reaffirms the SSC’s status as a key player on the global stage, drawing international attention and raising the stakes for all involved.

Why the Sasol Solar Challenge Stands Out

What sets the SSC apart from other solar events is its unique blend of innovation, strategy, and endurance. Competitors must navigate not only the technical challenges of solar vehicle design but also the strategic complexities of route planning and energy management. Breakdowns and obstacles are all part of the journey, but it’s the teamwork and innovative problem-solving that define the SSC experience. This event isn’t just a race; it’s a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of sustainable mobility.

Rob Walker, Director of the Sasol Solar Challenge, emphasizes the significance of these elements: “Teamwork, innovation, and strategy are all central to the Sasol Solar Challenge, with teams required to not only navigate the technical challenges of the route and their solar-powered cars but also strategic elements including route planning and energy optimisation.”

Engage with Us: Fan Engagement on a Global Scale

The 2024 SSC is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of solar technology and sustainability, designed to engage fans both on the ground and online. Spectators along the route can look forward to interactive activities, while those following from around the world can join the excitement through live streams, social media updates, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content. Whether you’re cheering from the sidelines or tuning in from afar, the SSC offers something for everyone.

Walker further encourages fan participation: “We believe that the future of mobility lies in sustainable solutions that enhance transport systems while also protecting the planet. With this year’s event, we want to emphasize the importance of embracing innovative technologies to reduce our carbon footprint and promote clean transportation.”

Innovation, Technology, and Strategy at the Core

Innovation is at the heart of the SSC, and this year’s event is no exception. As Walker noted, “Breakdowns are common, demanding teamwork and innovative solutions to get competitors to the finish line in an epic showdown that provides inspiration for future entrants and exciting viewing for spectators.” This year, expect to see innovation in action as teams battle the elements and each other to reach the finish line.

Celebrating Women in STEM: Record Participation in 2024

The 2024 SSC marks a significant milestone in the event’s history, with a record number of female participants across various roles—from drivers and engineers to key figures in communication and marketing. This year’s focus on gender diversity is a powerful statement about the growing role of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Sasol is proud to highlight the achievements of these women, who are not only competing but leading the charge towards a more inclusive future in sustainable technology.

Elton Fortuin, Sasol’s Vice President of Group Brand and Communications, expressed his excitement: “We are very encouraged by the increased number of women participants in both the main challenge and the schools programme. The event is set to become even more exciting, and we look forward to seeing women participants giving it their best and hopefully grabbing a podium finish at the end.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Beyond the main competition, the SSC continues to inspire future generations through its dynamic Schools Programme. This initiative brings the excitement of the SSC to young learners, fostering a passion for STEM through interactive activities and educational workshops. As the solar cars race across South Africa, the SSC’s Schools Programme ensures that the spirit of innovation reaches every corner of the country.

Sasol’s Commitment to Renewable Energy

Sasol is committed to advancing renewable energy solutions. The SSC is a bold statement of this commitment, showcasing how innovation can drive a more sustainable future. Fortuin adds, “In Sasol’s own operations, we’re making strides toward our ambitious goal of securing 1,200 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030 – enough clean energy to power over 700,000 households. To date, we’ve struck deals for over 750 megawatts, with several projects already under construction and set to come online soon. These developments mark a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable energy.”

Join Us on This Thrilling Journey

The 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge is an event like no other, bringing together the best in solar technology, innovation, and human endurance. We invite you to be part of this incredible journey, whether by following the route in person or engaging with us online. Witness the future of mobility unfold as teams from around the world push the limits of what’s possible with solar power.

As part of the 2024 edition of this first-of-its-kind GBV-prevention programme, Sasol and Primestars hosted a special screening of the ‘What About The Boys?’ movie at the Ster-Kinekor complex at Secunda Mall in Mpumalanga.

It was a day filled with inspiration and a shared vision to forge a safe tomorrow.

Adolescent males in South Africa face a challenging environment, with a myriad of social issues impacting their development. Poverty, teenage pregnancy, bullying, low self-esteem, and parental unemployment are prevalent challenges affecting learners’ academic performance in secondary schools.

Challenges in their hostile living environments, including negative peer pressure, bullying, and a lack of social support, call for interventions involving positive role models, self-esteem development, and strong family and community support Collectively, these issues emphasize the need for a more supportive and inclusive environment to nurture the potential of young men in South Africa.

Harmful stereotypes can be as detrimental to men and young boys as they are to women and the girl child.

16 May marked International Day of The Boy Child, which advocates the very ethos of ‘What About The Boys? ‘in mentoring young men on social equality as well as a priority focus on the well-being and development of the boy child.

Statistics suggest that boys are struggling at home and in school and therefore need more support and guidance than ever before. Taking into consideration that generally, boys’ maturity on all levels is often 18 months to 2 years behind most girls, the critical argument is that more needs to be done in re-evaluating the traditional yet seemingly toxic notions of masculinity.

The societal expectations of masculinity that promote aggression, dominance, and emotional suppression are outdated and unhealthy. By challenging toxic masculinity, the first-of-its-kind GBV-preventative ‘What About The Boys? seeks to redefine what it means to be a good man.

“What About the Boys?” was designed to help boys redefine masculinity by teaching them to share emotions in healthy ways, accept and connect with others, manage emotional triggers, stand up and speak out against bullying and inequality and break free from rigid stereotypes.

As a socially responsible corporate and community developer, Sasol is forging a safer and more equitable society for future generations. A key partner to the ‘What About The Boys?’ programme, Sasol along with Primestars and other action-leaders continue to empower tangible change in the fight against gender-based violence.

‘”Enough is enough, and we are empowering young men to be ambassadors for good in their communities and society. Our young men are a key component in the battle against gender-based violence that has caused so much societal damage.” – Mashudu Ndou, Sasol Head of Community Affairs, Secunda Operations

“In this Movement For Change we are redefining masculinity and supporting boys on their journey to becoming good men! Forging a society where every man, boy, woman and girl know that equality, dignity and respect are rights not privileges” – Nkosinathi Moshoana, Primestars Chief Operating Officer.

Through the Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme, Sasol Energy continues to make a positive impact by supporting communities that are in close proximity to its participating retail sites. As part of this social impact initiative, Sasol Pinehaven donated educational Christmas packs aimed at uplifting the spirits of children during the festive season to Simunye: We Are One Projects. The donation handover event took place on the 14th of December in Muldersdrift. Simunye is a Non-Profit Organisation that assists 0-6 year-old children from disadvantaged backgrounds in the Krugersdorp area through food provision and Early Childhood Development.

Sasol Energy is proud to have delighted more than 50 children, who benefitted from this donation, which has brought hope and joy to those who ordinarily do not experience the cheer and excitement that comes with the festive season.

In support of the initiative, various Sasol Pinehaven’s suppliers heeded the call and joined forces to make the event bigger and better by donating lunch for the day. The sponsors included Rolling Chicken, Ola Ice Cream, Magpie, Lettuce Eat, SG Convenience, Twizza (Pty)Ltd , ABI, RCL Foods (Pieman’s) as well as Clover SA proving once again that collaboration is the cornerstone of community upliftment and that it truly does take a village to make a bigger impact.

The Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme is a Social Impact initiative aimed at uplifting and improving the lives of those who live near Sasol’s Retail sites and is primarily targeted at those who are less privileged. Sasol Energy matches franchisee proposal or co-created concept rand-for-rand on initiatives focusing on education, health, safety, environment, work skills development, and philanthropic interventions.

As part of the Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme, Sasol King Shaka Airport donated cognitive stimulating children’s educational learning material to Hillbilly Pre-Primary School based in Tongaat community, KwaZulu-Natal. This handover was done in an effort to improve the quality of education and to encourage the development of young, curious minds by learning through play. Early Childhood Development (ECD) is one of Sasol’s social impact priorities, under the education pillar. Interventions in the ECD centers aim to strengthen learning and development for children at their foundation phase. The event took place on August 24, 2023, held at the school.

This is in line with the 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4), which seeks to ensure that there is inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning for all, as well as the National Development (NDP) mandate to provide every child with a minimum of two years of pre-primary school exposure before they enter basic schooling.

The Sasol Friendly Neighbour Programme is a Social Impact initiative aimed at uplifting and improving the lives of those who reside in close proximity to Sasol’s Retail sites, primarily targeting those who are less privileged.
